Members receive quality health care from their choice of health professionals in the First Plan Blue provider network. With First Plan Blue, members are part of a local health plan. Friendly, helpful people who live and work right here in the area answer all of your questions about your coverage.

First Plan Blue’s provider network includes most primary and specialty care providers throughout our five-county Northeast Minnesota service area, plus additional providers in nearby counties.

When they enroll, First Plan Blue members are asked to select a primary care clinic as their “medical home.” Members may change their primary care clinic at any time by contacting Customer Service.

First Plan Blue has simplified access to specialty care. Most clinics do not require referrals to see specialists in our network.

Members who choose a Duluth Clinic-affiliated clinichave direct access to specialists only in the SMDC Health System. They must have referrals from their primary care clinic if they wish to see specialists outside of the SMDC system. Members who choose any other primary care clinic in the First Plan Blue network have direct access to all network providers. Referrals are needed only if members want to see providers who are not in the First Plan Blue network.
